Telecoms firm to bring 25 new jobs to Athlone by next spring

SolanoTech, a four-year-old Athlone-based software company, announced this week (August 29 ) that it is to create 25 vacancies for design and development engineers, and hopes to have them all employed before the end of March.

“This is the first big expansion of the company,” said HR manager, Michael McCann.

“This is a pretty big recruitment, and we’re pretty focussed. They have to be up and running by end of quarter one, 2012,” he added.

SolanoTech presently has seven employees, and is based in the Midlands Innovation Research Centre in Athlone IT. It was set up in 2007 by John Mee and Santanu Mazumdar, is a client of Enterprise Ireland, and is also running a research project with the College of Engineering and Informatics in NUI Galway .

“Athlone is a natural location for SolanoTech as there is a long history of telecom systems and software development in the area complemented by the presence of international firms, local indigenous companies, and the AIT software research institute all operating in the sector,” said John Mee, CEO of SolanoTech.

This expansion is believed to be a result of a contract SolanoTech signed in June with a “major international client” in mobile telecommunications.

Mee and Mazumdar have many years’ combined international experience in telecom systems development, and their company operates as a product and services company, with expertise in control and management of networked TV on fixed and mobile IP broadband networks.

SolanoTech’s services business is in high-end systems design and software development in the telecoms network management area.

Both Barry Egan, Midlands regional director of Enterprise Ireland, and Deputy Denis Naughten have welcomed this development.

Elsewhere, UK retail catalogue giant Argos has announced the likelihood of between 15 and 20 temporary positions at its Golden Island premises for the Christmas period.

The company has announced a recruitment drive for 800 such positions nationwide, with 57 of these earmarked for its three stores in the Midlands - Athlone, Tullamore, and Portlaoise.

Details on all these positions are available from the local store.
