Athlone Film Club kicks off its new season with a comedic tone on Tuesday September 6 at 8pm in the Dean Crowe Theatre with the 2010 French comedy, My Afternoons with Margueritte.
Directed by Jean Becker and starring the indomitable Gerard Depardieu, it is the story of Germain (Depardieu ), a large, unmarried, almost illiterate man in his fifties and Margueritte, an elderly woman with a passion for the written word. The unlikely friendship that develops between them leads to a change in both their lives.
For his whole life, Germain has been told by his drama queen mother that he’s an idiot. So he has lived up to her expectations. He spends each day at a café owned by his friend Francine getting involved in everyone’s business. His bus-driver girlfriend sees his better qualities, and so does Margueritte (Gisele Casadesus ), a 95-year-old he meets in the park, who, while reading books with him, quietly helps him see who he really is.
Showing an authentic view of French provincial life, this unassuming French comedy is smart, emotionally engaging, and very charming.
With impeccable acting by Depardieu and a lively supporting cast, this funny and enriching film starts the new season on a high note.
