An exciting new season for Athlone Film Club

The start of the autumn heralds an exciting new season for Athlone Film Club, which marks the club’s third year of entertaining Athlone audiences with classic and contemporary films in the Dean Crowe Theatre.

Commencing on Tuesday September 6 with the French comedy My Afternoons with Margueritte starring the prolific Gerard Depardieu, the Film Club offers an array of films from all over the world that will appeal to all ages and tastes.

Russia, South Africa, Mexico, and Australia are just some of the countries that audiences will be transported to with the magic of the big screen.

The Film Club always includes an Irish film in its selection and this season’s choice will hold a special significance for Athlone audiences. On September 20 the club is screening Congo - an Irish Affair which is the story of A Company, 35th Battalion of the Irish Army United Nations Contingent, sent to the Congo in 1961, and who became involved in war with mercenary-led Katangese separatists. This powerful documentary, which brings our military history to life, features some of our local soldiers. As a further treat for audiences, director Brendan Culleton will introduce the film and answer the audience’s questions.

Athlone audiences will also get the opportunity this season to view Of Gods and Men, the French award-winning film that wowed audiences and critics worldwide. Based on the true story of a group of monks living in North Africa, this deeply moving and powerful film outlines the monks’ faith, courage, and self-sacrifice in the face of terror and violence.

October brings a more comedic tone as the Film Club will screen The Rocky Horror Picture Show, in conjunction with Athlone Musical Society. Get those dancing shoes ready!

Of course no season is complete without the screening of a classic film, and this year the season ends on December 6 on a feel-good note with the 1961 Frank Capra film, A Pocketful of Miracles. A perfect way to get into the Christmas spirit!

Films are usually screened every second Tuesday in the Dean Crowe Theatre at 8pm. Membership offers great value for money. You can also come along as a temporary member for any movie of your choice. Members can avail of complimentary wine in the theatre bar prior to each screening, which is a great opportunity to socialise and catch up with friends during the week.
