Look to the skies - Abbeyshrule to host annual air show

Abbeyshrule will once again play host to its popular air show this August 20-21 at the airfield in Co Longford.

The show starts on Saturday August 20 with a fly-in by pilots and aircraft from all over Ireland. There will be a BBQ at the airfield that day along with a buffet that evening in the Rustic Inn. Local flying clubs Aero Club 2000 and Ultraflight will be offering trial flying lessons. The airfield will be open to the public, with a charge of €5 per car.

Trial flying lessons will also be offered before the main air display on Sunday August 21. The air display will feature all types of flying from the gentle and serene to the fast and furious.

The Irish Air Corps will display their maritime patrol aircraft as well as displaying a Cessna aircraft on the ground for everyone to see. The Gardaí will be on hand with a helicopter display while the Irish Coast Guards will give an air and sea rescue demo with the mighty S61 Sea King helicopter.

Ireland’s top aerobatic pilots Eddie Goggins, Dave Bruton, and Gerry Humphreys will be showcasing their talent. Also in attendance will be Aer Lingus, who are celebrating 75 years of service, and who will be represented by the Iolar. This is the perfect opportunity for visitors to see what it was like to fly as a passenger 75 years ago. The parachutists will also drop in during the day. Model aircrafts will also be in action.

Plenty of family and kids entertainment has also been organised for the day. Customs sniffer dog Ben will be giving demonstrations and visitors will have the chance to meet and talk to the display pilots. Entry on Sunday will be €10 per person with no charge for children under 12. Entry fee on Sunday will include free car parking on the airfield and a free draw for a trial flying lesson.

The Abbeyshrule Air Display and Fly-In promises to be a great weekend.
