Summer nights of folk and pop for Peter Doran and Arrow in the Sky

Folk-pop heavyweight Peter Doran and fellow folk group Arrow in the Sky are taking to the road this August for your auditory pleasure and will be playing across the Midlands including this Sunday August 7 in Danny Byrnes, Mullingar and the Passionfruit Theatre, Athlone on Friday August 12.

Peter Doran started honing his craft at the tender age of 11; inspired by his cousin’s heavy metal albums, he started to learn the guitar. After a few years of high-velocity shredding, Peter “became less interested in the speed of the notes, but in their character instead”. In 2006 he released his debut album Wood, a rich collection of startlingly mature songs.

In 2009 Peter was contacted by acclaimed Italian producer Filippo Gaetani, who had heard one of the singer-songwriter’s demo tracks online and was eager to collaborate.“Peter has the capability of moving your soul with simple yet profound lyrics, and his vocal tone and melodies are uncommon,” raves Gaetani, who has worked with Andy Bell, Stefano Bollini, and Adrina Thorpe. “He stands among my favorite folk/alternative artists of all time.” After pre-production at Gaetani’s Tuscany studio, recordings were done at Grouse Lodge and eventually mastered at London’s legendary Abbey Road Studios.

Sleepless Street is the glorious result, a gorgeous, multi-layered work by a gifted artist swiftly gaining ground on the paths of his idols.

Over the last decade or so Peter has become equally at home in both live and studio settings. Many years of live performance, either with his band or without, have resulted in an artist who is completely at ease on stage, and whose only purpose is to connect with his audience.

He will be supported on the night by Arrow in the Sky, a folk band formed from the ashes of Till the Morning Comes.

Their live sound can be likened to other harmony-laden song-driven artists such as CSN and Simon & Garfunkel or more contemporary artists such as My Morning Jacket, Fleet Foxes, and Bowerbirds. With an arsenal of traditional instruments doing very untraditional things, strange and boundless vocals soaring then cascading, AITS have created a world and sonic imagery all of their own. They weave an aural tapestry of folk, blues, alt-rock into their own unique blend of Irish-Americana.

Peter Doran and Arrow in the Sky play Danny Byrnes, Mullingar on Sunday August 7 and the Passionfruit Theatre, Athlone on Friday August 12 at 8.30pm. Tickets are priced at €5 for the Passionfruit gig, for more information call (086 ) 3338457.
