Three year ban for four-car smash

A man who caused over €3,000 worth of damage after he reversed into four cars in the middle of the day, was banned from driving for three years in the District Court this week (July 20 ).

Garda Sean Fahy gave evidence how he had attended to the incident at Millrace, Bealnamullia, Athlone at 11.50am on August 25, 2010 after witnesses had called to report the multiple collision.

Paul Clancy (40 ), with an address at Portaneena, Ballykeeran, Athlone was reversing out of a property in the Millrace estate to leave his girlfriend home “about 200 metres” when the collisions happened.

Garda Fahy explained how Clancy ran into a house, was subsequently arrested, and when intoxilised, produced a reading of 48 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath.

Clancy admitted he knew he had collided with the other vehicles, but told the court his insurance had already paid the €3,500 worth of damage caused.

Judge Seamus Hughes accepted this and disqualified Clancy from driving for three years on the drink driving charge, and fined him €250. He also convicted Clancy of dangerous driving, and of leaving the scene of an accident, giving him concurrent three-year bans on each count.
