Custume Barracks, Athlone will be hosting a careers day for secondary school students next Thursday November 13, which will give young people a chance to examine whether a career in the Defence Forces is for them.
According to a spokesperson for the 4 Western Brigade, the opportunities for young school leavers to learn new skills and develop hidden abilities is unmatched by any other sector.
“The Defence Forces are entering a very exciting phase in our development. A career in the Army, Navy, or Air Corps is a life like no other...Overseas missions in particular offer a ‘life less ordinary’ to young students, male or female. We are interested in attracting the brightest and best into the organisation.”
The spokesperson highlighted the longstanding positive relationship maintained between the local barracks and the local wider community. “We feel it is important to maintain and improve this relationship, particularly with the secondary schools. In order to achieve this and to open up a dialogue with schools in the region with regard to careers in the Army, Navy, and Air Corps, we propose to hold a series of career days in different regional locations in the Brigade,” he said.
The next 4 Western Brigade Schools Careers Day takes place at Custume Barracks, Athlone next Thursday, November 13.
The day will begin at 10am with a presentation on careers in the Defence Forces. This will be followed by a Q&A session with a young officer recently returned from overseas. The day will finish with a tour of the facilities and equipment of Custume Barracks .
