Mayor of Athlone, Cllr Egbert Moran, has indicated that the purchase of the Railway Field in the town, and the creation of a new road could result in the return of a one-way system.
Speaking to the Advertiser Cllr Moran said that he was confident that the land would be acquired. “The county manager and CIE are currently in meetings. I would be very confident that we will get the Railway Field in the short term,” he said.
“We parked the one-way system because of problems. We will have to examine the plans again,” he added.
Cllr Moran met recently with the Minister for Transport, Noel Dempsey. Speaking after the meeting, Cllr Moran said, “ I believe that there is now a clear consensus that this strategic road must be facilitated and that it is in everyone’s interest, including CIE’s.”
