Not long to go for Made in Midlands

With sponsorship from Westmeath County Enterprise Board, The Fatted Calf restaurant in Glasson, and Allens of Athlone, the Made in the Midlands Food Village is ready to go at the Athlone Agri Show on Sunday June 26.

Among the 20-plus producers attending the show will be Prue & Simon’s pork products, Ballyshiel chocolates, Meadowsweet Apiaries, Mossfield Organic Cheeses, Sweet Creations cakes, Bridgefield Farm homemade ice-cream, Greenergy health foods, Hillside Farm organic meats, Rogan’s Smokehouse meats, A Slice of Life catering and restaurant, Kennedy Meats, Nicely Iced breads and cakes, The Fatted Calf restaurant, and The Sheraton Hotel.

Cookery demos will take place as follows: local health foods with Lynda McFarland at 11am; cake demo with Allens Cake Shop at 12pm; local produce demo with Fergal from The Fatted Calf in Glasson at 1pm; chocolate demo with Kevin Ward from The Sheraton Hotel at 2pm; wild food demo with Lisa Brooks at 3pm (after her foraging walk ); and local produce demo with Fergal O'Donnell from The Fatted Calf in Glasson at 4pm.

The Foraging for Wild Food stroll through Moydrum woods will take place at 2pm; meet Lisa at the Foragers stand in the Made in the Midlands tent at 2pm.

The Quirky Cake competition will take place at 3pm - please bring your cake and a list of ingredients used. The competition will be judged by Elaine Denby from A Slice of Life, Fergal O’Donnell from The Fatted Calf, and Kevin Ward from The Sheraton Hotel, and the prize is a €50 voucher for Allens Cake Shop.

The main criteria for the Quirky Cake competition is that it must be tasty, but entrants can feel free to use an unusual combination of ingredients, eg beetroot and chocolate; courgette and lemon curd; gluten free/ sugar free ingredients, etc!
