The vice-chancellor of a leading Malaysian university has been conferred with a distinguished fellowship by AIT.
Professor Dato’ Kamarudin Hussin, vice-chancellor of the Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP ) was awarded AIT’s highest honour during a visit to Athlone. Professor Kamarudin is the first international recipient of the award.
Vice-chancellor of UniMAP since 2002, Professor Kamarudin is a prolific academic and researcher, teaching numerous courses in chemistry, materials science, metallurgy and polymer. He is the author of more than 20 books and close to 300 research papers.
AIT president, Professor Ciarán Ó Catháin, said that: “Professor Kamarudin has been a good friend to AIT in recent years and has helped strengthen relationships between our respective institutions. UniMAP shares many of the same values as AIT and is committed to sharing the benefits of higher education with society at large. We are developing research links between Athlone and Perlis, and I have no doubt that this will be to the benefit of both of our countries.”
Professor Kamarudin’s own research involves the morphology, and thermal and mechanical properties of materials such as palm ash, palm slag, and printed circuit board wastes to be used as brake pads. The uses of recycled plastic fibre is another of his areas of interest.
He is one of the recipients of a 1.5 million Ringgits (€340,000 ) grant from the King Abdul Aziz City for Science and Technology Institute for research in green cement concrete - an initiative that generated three separate patents - in Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, and the United States.
Professor Kamarudin was bestowed with the title of Dato’ship, an honour given by the Regent of the state of Perlis for all the services he has rendered to UniMAP, the state of Perlis and Malaysia.
