Marist College and Golden Island supporting the community

The Marist College and Golden Island Shopping Centre in Athlone have a fantastic record of supporting groups who are working to improve the local community.

Earlier in the year the transition year students approached Golden Island with an idea they felt could raise some much needed funds for the Midlands Simon Community. The students wanted to ‘Sleep Out For Simon’ in the centre and raise money through sponsorship.

The idea was the brainchild of Luke Kilmartin who was fully supported by the school and deputy principal Tony Colgan in particular. Tony McDermott and all in Golden Island also showed wonderful support in facilitating the transition year students.

Over 20 students participated over three days and in total over €5,500 was raised, which will make a significant difference to the work of Midlands Simon Community.

CEO of Midlands Simon, Tony O’Riordan, said “No one chooses to be homeless but by supporting projects like ‘Sleep Out For Simon’ people can choose to help end it. We would like to say a huge thank you to Luke Kilmartin and all the transition years for taking on the project, to Tony Colgan and the Marist College for their support, and to Tony McDermott and Golden Island for their wonderful assistance. It was fantastic to see such willingness on the part of the students to want to make a difference, and it shows what can be achieved when we work together.”

Midlands Simon Community are providing essential ongoing supports and care to those affected by homelessness across the Midlands Region. Since 2006 Midlands Simon has supported over 900 people.
