The Unwanted play in historic Strokestown Park House

Many were disappointed last December when The Unwanted, featuring Dervish’s Cathy Jordan, alongside Seamie O’Dowd and Rick Epping, had to postpone their concert in Roscommon due to the adverse weather.

The trio are back this summer and raring to go, and as a special treat will play in the historic surrounds of the beautiful Strokestown Park House for a one-off concert next Thursday June 9 at 8pm.

From the rich traditions of both sides the Atlantic has come the source and inspiration of the music of The Unwanted – three Sligo-based musicians, each with exceptional talent and a lifetime dedication to their music.

Roscommon-born Cathy Jordan, lead singer of acclaimed group Dervish, moves effortlessly and with soaring voice between sean-nós, appalachian ballad, and contemporary folksong, lending rich accompaniment on bodhrán, bouzouki, and bones. Her engaging stage presence and easy interaction with the audience turns a simple concert into an evening at home among good friends.

Sligo native Seamie O’Dowd (guitar, fiddle, dobro ) grew up steeped in the tradition of Sligo fiddling, early on expanding his repertoire to include new world traditions. Today he is as accomplished playing blues on slide guitar as he is playing jigs and reels. Seamie is well known both from his years with Dervish and from performing with the best of Irish traditional musicians. Rick Epping (harmonica, concertina, banjo, mandolin, jaw harp ), a native of California, has been moving back and forth between Ireland and the United States for over 40 years and has been playing the music of both lands since childhood. Rick brings to the group a wealth of experience and authentic style.

Together, The Unwanted have created a seamless fusion of these traditions. Wherever they perform, The Unwanted are finding that they are welcome and very much wanted, indeed.

Tickets for this event are priced at just €14/€12 and can be reserved through Roscommon Arts Centre’s box office on (090 ) 6625824.
