Three youth services in Westmeath are to receive funding of some €260,000 for 2011; Athlone Youth Information Centre, Midlands Project Athlone, and Mullingar Youth Response Project. The funding was announced by Minister for Children Frances Fitzgerald this week. Athlone Youth Information Centre is set to receive €58, 230, Midlands Project Athlone will get €101,988, and Mullingar Youth Response Project will get funding of €92,168. Longford Youth Services Project also received funding of €92,168 from the Office of the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs.
Speaking after the announcement, Longford-Westmeath Deputy Nicky McFadden explained that such funding for youth services in the county was a priority.
“Funding for youth service organisations in the constituency is essential. The work these groups carry out on behalf of young people is truly impressive and I commend all those who work with young people. It is so important that young people have a confidential and non-judgmental facility to go to ask questions on a range of issues, whether it is employment, career guidance, or counselling,” Deputy McFadden said.
“Young people are such an integral part of our society and it is important to realise this by tapping into their potential and ensuring they are adequately supported. The funding announced by Minister Frances Fitzgerald will help significantly.”
