Garrycastle made it two wins out of two when claiming the spoils against neighbours Athlone in Tang on Sunday last. Athlone enjoyed wind advantage in the opening half but failed to make it count trailing by two points at the break, 0-6 to 0-4.
Garrycastle stretched their lead after the break and Athlone were left with an uphill task both literally and metaphorically.
We were thrown a lifeline midway through the second half when a John Stapleton goal gave Athlone a one point lead. Hopes were high that we could kick on and stretch our lead but it was Garrycastle who seized control of the game and kicked 1-5 without reply.
The goal, as much as it pains me to admit it, was worth seeing as Alan ‘Dollar’ Daly (who else? ) fired a perfectly executed bicycle kick to the back of the net. Game over. Dermot McManus did manage to find the net from a close in free but it was too little too late.
Athlone are now under pressure after two straight defeats and while there is now a break until mid-July will need to get back to winning ways in our next outing against Maryland.
