Excitement is building as the National Rehab/Powers Whiskey Pub Quiz, in association with the Vintners’ Federation of Ireland (VFI ), moves onto the county finals stage. With the first round of pub quiz nights concluded, winning teams from throughout Westmeath are set to battle it out at the county final taking place on Friday November 7, in The Auld Sheebeen, Moate.
The county final winners will have the honour of representing Westmeath in the national final on Friday November 21 at the Shamrock Lodge, Athlone. Legendary GAA commentator, Micheál Ó Muircheartaigh, will feature as special guest quizmaster for the national final and what all-Ireland would be complete without his commentary on proceedings?
As part of the initiative, pub quiz nights have already taken place in some 325 participating VFI pubs throughout the country. All proceeds from the local, county, and national pub quiz nights are going towards the further development of Rehab services nationwide.
Pauline Crowley, head of marketing, Rehab, said, “Last year’s Rehab/Powers Whiskey Pub Quiz was a tremendous success with 280 VFI pubs taking part and €80,000 raised. This year the response from pubs has been even greater so we are hoping to surpass that record. It really is a fantastic and fun way of raising much-needed funds for Rehab.”
John Moriarty, County Westmeath VFI chairman, commented, “Westmeath VFI Branch is delighted to be involved in the Rehab/Powers Whiskey Pub Quiz and it’s great to see such a positive response from so many of our members. The pub is the social hub for many communities in this country so where better to stage these nights that will bring people together in support of such a worthy cause.”
Zoe Traynor, senior brand manager, Powers Whiskey, added, "Powers Whiskey is proud to support such a great initiative. We encourage people to get involved, have a great night, and help raise lots of money. We would also remind everyone to drink sensibly and never ever drink and drive."
Each quiz will consist of ten rounds of six questions covering topics including general knowledge, history, sport, TV and film, music, and current affairs. All participants must be over 18 years of age.
