Roscommon Mini Marathon

The Carers Association Roscommon Mini Marathon takes place on bank holiday Monday May 2 over a distance of 10km.

Now in its fourth year, the rapidly growing event affords local charities, clubs, schools, and organisations an opportunity to raise much-needed funds. The registration fee of €15 will go towards the development of services for family carers in Roscommon and surrounding areas.

This year a timing chip is being introduced which will electronically time each of the participants, allowing them access to their times after the event and on the Run Ireland website.

Prizes will be presented in three categories - running, walking, and wheelchair - along with novelty prizes for the most senior and junior participants. Each participant who successfully completes the course will receive a medal and a well deserved cuppa for their efforts.

For more information please phone Anne on (086 ) 8320093 or contact the Carers Association Roscommon. Online entries at www.runireland.com or www.carersireland.com

Ghostly goings on with Blithe Spirit

The Breffni Players from Carrick-on-Shannon are celebrating their 68th year with the production of Blithe Spirit by Noel Coward, directed by Angus Dunne. The show has just played to full houses in Carrick-on-Shannon and Longford and is coming to Roscommon Arts Centre on Saturday April 16 at 8pm.

Blithe Spirit is a comedy about socialite and novelist Charles Condomine who invites eccentric medium and clairvoyant, Madame Arcati, to his house to conduct a séance, hoping to gather material for his next book. The scheme backfires when he is haunted by the ghost of his annoying and temperamental first wife, Elvira, following the séance. Elvira attempts to disrupt Charles’ marriage to his second wife, Ruth, who cannot see or hear the ghost.

Don’t miss out on this great night’s entertainment – to book your ticket, call Roscommon Arts Centre on (090 ) 6625824.

‘One Good Idea’

The ‘Climate Coolers’ who are made up of six second year Convent of Mercy students - Róisín Finan, Caoimhe McStay, Megan McStay, Sarah Keenan, Ella Whyte, and Shauna Hanley - have been successful in getting through to the national finals of the Sustainable Energy Ireland ‘One Good Idea’ competition with their project based on halting climate change.

The girls’ campaign has created awareness among their peers and their community of the need for immediate action in helping our environment. The group will travel to Dublin Castle to present their project to a panel of judges in May.

The girls have also recently got through to the Eco Unesco regional finals of the “Young Environmentalist Awards – Eco Dens”. The students wish to thank all the staff for their constant support. A special word of thanks to Ms Blake for all her guidance and help.
