Hot Country awards for Ballinasloe

The second Hot Country entertainment awards show will take place on Monday May 16 at the Carlton Shearwater Hotel Ballinasloe.

Confirmed artists are as follows: Mike Denver, Robert Mizzell, Hugo Duncan, Louise Morrissey, Trudy Lalor, The Bachelors in Trouble, Shaun Loughrey, The Benn Sisters, The Davitts Showband, Matt Leavy, Nathan Carter, Stephen Smyth, Thomas Maguire and Fhiona Ennis, TR Dallas, Sandy Kelly, Derek Ryan, Simon Peters, Gerry Guthrie, Shaun Cuddy, John McNicholl, Ben Troy, and Paddy O’Brien, with more to be announced.

Hot Country is now in its 77th week of broadcast on Sky TV 201, Freesat 403, Free to View, and Chrous NTL Channel 107, showcasing the talents of Irish and American country music artists all over Europe, and is now the biggest country music show on TV.

Hot Country is broadcast nine times a week at the following times:

Sky 201, Freesat 403, Free to View: Monday (new show ) 8 - 9pm with repeats Tue and Sat 2 - 3 pm, Sunday 8 - 9 pm;

Chorus NTL channel 107: Main showing Tue 9.30pm, with repeats Thur 3pm, Sat 9am, Sun 2pm, Mon 2pm.

Admission on the night is just €20. Doors open at 7pm, with show at 8pm and dancing after the main event to Pam Jackson.

Colon cancer talk

A talk on colon cancer will take place at Ballinasloe Cancer Support Centre, Society Street, Ballinasloe on Wednesday April 27.

Mr Mark Regan MDFRCSI FRCS, gastrointestinal surgeon, will give a talk on colon cancer in Gullanes Hotel, Ballinasloe on Wednesday, April 27 at 7.30pm. Additional speakers will include Mr Ray Henry (chairman IACP ).

Get ready for the Ballinasloe 10k charity fun run

The local community is buzzing with excitement as the town prepares to host its second Ballinasloe 10k charity fun run this Sunday April 17.

The meeting point will be the Carlton Shearwater Hotel and C Spa from 9.30am, where pre-registered participants can collect their numbers and t-shirts and anyone who has not registered can do so. At 11.30am the race will start at Square D.

Locals are asked to note that there will be road delays between 12 and 3pm on the route, particularly on the Portumna Road, and through Beechlawn.

The fun run will finish at Poolboy where participants are welcome back to the Carlton Shearwater Hotel for live music and celebrations.

All proceeds will go to Relay for Life Ballinasloe, a 24-hour community celebration which honours those who are affected by cancer and which is under the umbrella of the Irish Cancer Society. The Star Gazer Lily Foundation is delighted to bring this event to Ballinasloe.

Award-winning writer inspires local talent

Award-winning storyteller, writer, and poet Rab Swannock Fulton has recently finished helping the students of Ardscoil Mhuire release their creativity on the world. His writing workshops consisted of a mixture of games, discussions, writing exercises, as well as students examining and reinventing stories from Little Red Riding Hood to MacBeth.

The students benefited from his expertise following the success of student Jennifer Kelly in the national Write-a-Poem competition last year. As part of her prize the school was invited to take part in a writer in residence programme.

Rab Swannock Fulton’s work has featured in many publications including Books Ireland, Chapman, Criterion, Cyphers, Poetry Ireland Review, Poetry London Newsletter, Poetry Scotland, The Shop, West Coast Magazine, and West 47. Rab is currently working on two online writing projects, ‘Pirates, Dragons and Moon Monsters’ and ‘Marcus Marcus and the Hurting Heart’.

Galway Rose selected in Ballinasloe

The official Galway Rose selection night took place on Saturday April 2 at the Carlton Shearwater Hotel in Ballinasloe. This year’s judges were1998 Rose of Tralee Luzveminda O’Sullivan, Carlton Shearwater Hotel manager Jacinta Naughton, and Artisan Restaurant owner Matt Skeffington.

The hotel was packed to capacity as Claire Keane, a County Clare native representing Central Park Group who own popular, nightclubs, bars and restaurants throughout Ireland, took the top spot.

The team at the Carlton Shearwater would like to congratulate Claire, and look forward to welcoming her back for the annual visit from the Rose of Tralee in August.
