Music and magic to mark St Patrick’s Day

A colourful parade, a magic show, live music, and a treasure hunt are among the events being organised to delight locals this coming Thursday, St Patrick’s Day 2011.

The day’s festivities will kick off with a treasure hunt at 11am, followed by the parade which kicks off from Golden Island at 2.15pm.

Over 30 entries have already been received for the Athlone parade, including marching bands; floats from local groups such as Athlone Institute of Technology, Athlone Little Theatre, and the Credit Union; and displays from local businesses including Grenhams Travel who are celebrating 100 years in business this year.

Three marching bands - Ravens Marching Band, Athlone Town Youth Marching Band, and Athlone Pipe Band - will provide the musical entertainment during the parade. The Army and the Order of Malta will also be represented in the parade.

Local groups and businesses who would like to take part in the parade are asked to have their entries in by Wednesday March 16, though entries will also be accepted on the day. Entrants should assemble at Golden Island at 1.30pm.

A balloon launch from the castle will take place as the parade passes. The parade will be followed by a magic show in the civic square from 3pm to 4pm, and live music from four different acts in the Civic Square from 4-6pm.

The St Patrick’s Day comittee would like to invite all to come out and support the events on the day and join in the fun.

Anyone who would like to volunteer to help with Thursday’s events is asked to contact Helen McCaul at Athlone Community Taskforce at (090 ) 6494555.
