A fresh new band on the Irish traditional music scene, Triúr is made up of AIT graduate Ger Chambers on accordion; Úna Ní Fhlannagáin on harp and vocals; and Brewen Favrau on pipes, whistle, and vocals.
The three members bring a diverse mixture of influences to the group, including the energy of the céilí bands, the rich heritage of the piping traditions of Brittany and Scotland, and the sean-nós of County Galway.
Meeting in Galway in 2010, the three musicians discovered a rare congruence of complimentary instruments, musical values, and technical mastery, and egged on by positive reactions by listeners, recently decided to formalise their musical friendship. Disdaining the generic and the homogenous, Triúr strive to create music that is both innovative and faithful to their culture, both vibrant and soulful.
Athlone audiences will be happy to see their adoptee, Ger Chambers, adding his characteristic brand of dhrivin’! tunes to the group in the Passionfruit Theatre this Saturday March 12.
Originally from a well-known musical family in Mayo, Ger founded the college’s traditional music society while studying there. As chairperson of Tradsoc, he organised Irish traditional music events - both sessions and concerts - throughout the town and college, and is delighted to be returning to his second home. He will be joined by Úna Ní Fhlannagáin from Co Galway - a harpist and singer who has performed throughout Ireland, Europe, North America, and the Middle East, and won multiple prizes at the All-Ireland Fleadh, Keadue, Oireachtas, O’Carolan, and Granard Harp Festivals; and award-winning Breton piper Brewen Favrau. Triúr play the Passionfruit Theatre, Athlone, this Saturday March 12 at 8.30pm. Tickets €10; available on the door.
