Athlone Midland Samaritans give emotional support to those experiencing feelings of distress or despair, including those which may lead to suicide. They are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, at 1850 609090.
Listening is what Samaritans do best. It is an active skill which helps you connect with the person with whom you are communicating. Being a good listener is about caring enough to take time out and being there for another person. You don’t need any formal qualifications or previous experience to be a Samaritan volunteer. You do need to be able to listen and not judge people and allow them the time and space to explore their feelings.
Are you able to give three hours a week to make a real difference to others?
It can be a challenging experience, but you will be fully prepared before you become a volunteer. Your commitment will be recognised and valued and your skills and experience constantly developed.
Volunteering with Samaritans will ensure that they continue to provide this valuable service in a changing society that is calling out to be heard.
With over 20,000 calls coming in to Athlone Samaritans every year, you will help make a real difference to others.
