South Westmeath Hospice launches 5k Fun Run

The third annual AIT/South Westmeath Hospice 5k Fun Run/Walk will take place on Sunday April 3 2011 from Athlone Institute of Technology. Over the last two years the event has gone from strength to strength, attracting over 400 people from all over Ireland to participate.

The race is open to anyone over the age of 12, and participants are encouraged to dress up for the event as they can walk it or run it.

Speaking at the launch of the 5k Fun Run, Dr Tony Lowry, chairman of the South Westmeath Hospice, said “The 5k Fun Run is the South Westmeath Hospice’s major annual fundraiser and the money goes towards the upkeep of the hospice and the development of new services for the hospice. We are grateful for all of the support we receive from the people doing the race as they are the ones who make it such as success. I would also like to thank our sponsors Calor Direct and Athlone Institute of Technology.”

Race organiser Gordon Brett, sports manager in AIT, is encouraging people to train now and get fit for the race.

“The race is about eight weeks away so people have an opportunity to get fit in that time. It is about having fun as much as it is about racing but there are good prizes on offer to the elite athletes. AIT run FIT4LIFE which is a great opportunity to train with a group of people at your own level to prepare yourself for the race.”
