General Election candidate Cllr Robert Troy has moved to quash rumours that his party is considering dropping one of its three candidates in the constituency. He also refuted claims that if dropped he was considering running as an Independent candidate.
His comments came after the rumour mill went into overdrive during the week with claims that Fianna Fail was to axe one of its three candidates in the Longford-Westmeath constituency - Troy, Mary O’Rourke, and Peter Kelly - from the party ticket.
“It is bizarre to think that even if Micheál Martin asked a candidate to stand down that he would ask the youngest candidate and the only candidate who has been through a selection convention and got the party’s backing,” said Cllr Troy.
“Our leader is talking about rebuilding the party, and as the youngest in the field it would be illogical for me to go; I am hoping to be around for many years.
“I certainly wasn’t asked to step down, and I am certainly not considering running as an Independent. I believe certain elements want to destabilise the campaign,” he said, adding that people were being very receptive to him on the campaign trail so far.
