Mother appeals for information on missing Athlone woman

Gardai are “concerned” as to the whereabouts of a well-known Athlone woman who has not been seen since Sunday evening.

Marie Greene (37 ), from St Mel’s Terrace was last seen by her family at around 9pm on February 13, and gardaí in Athlone are looking for assistance in tracing her whereabouts.

“We would be anxious for her return,” said a Garda spokesman.

Marie, who would be very recognisable from walking her dog Scooby around town, is described as being approximately 5’5” in height, of slim build and fair complexion.

She has medium length brown hair which is normally tied in a pony tail, and when last seen was wearing blue jeans, white runners, and a navy zipped up fleece.

Her mother Winnie, who is a diabetic, and for whom Marie is primary carer, was very anxious when speaking to the Advertiser yesterday (Thursday February 17 ).

Mrs Greene explained how it was Marie who would take her blood pressure and perform the pin-prick finger test that diabetics must do to measure their blood sugar levels on a daily basis. Marie also took her mother out for a regular walk.

“I haven’t left the house since Sunday. She’s either held agin’ her will, or dead in a ditch somewhere. Somethin’s wrong, somewhere,” said a tearful Winnie.

“She never did this before. Well, when her father was alive [nine years ago] and she was goin’ with a fella in the Batteries, but we knew where she was then,” said Mrs Greene.

“Will ye say I miss her terribly. I don’t think I’d be able to cope if anythin’ happened to her. Even her dog is cryin’ every day.”

Winnie appealed for anybody with any information to contact Athlone Garda Station at (090 ) 6498550 or the Garda Confidential phone line at (1800 ) 666 111.
