Athlone Film Club will be proving that oldies are the best next Tuesday February 22 in the Dean Crowe Theatre, with the screening of All About Eve, a classic that has retained its edge, and remains a sharp beautifully written gem.
All About Eve is a 1950 American drama written and directed by Joseph L Mankiewicz, based on the 1946 short story “The Wisdom of Eve,” by Mary Orr.
The film stars Bette Davis as Margo Channing, a highly regarded but aging Broadway star. Jealousy, manipulation, and betrayal unfold in this tour de force drama as an ambitious wannabe, played by Anne Baxter, sets her sights on stealing the spotlight from the legendary stage actress.
Insecurities and designer gowns abound as Margo desperately tries to hold onto her friends and her career.
George Sanders, Celeste Holm, Hugh Marlowe, and Thelma Ritter also appear, and the film provided one of Marilyn Monroe’s earliest important roles.
Perfectly cast and solidly scripted, this dark Hollywood satire contains a brilliantly self-deprecating performance from Bette Davis. Smart, cynical, terrifically entertaining, and one of the greatest films ever released about the movie industry.
Praised by critics at the time of its release, All About Eve was nominated for 14 Academy Awards, (a feat that was unmatched until the 1997 film Titanic ) and won six, including Best Picture. It is also the only film in Oscar history to receive four female acting nominations.
Come along at 7.30pm to partake og a glass of wine in the theatre bar before the film commences at 8pm. Temporary membership for the night is only €8.
