World record attempt to raise funds for homeless

Five young local men are to attempt to write themselves into the record books, while raising some much needed funds for Midlands Simon and Athlone Community Radio. The five aim to break the current Guinness World Record for the length of time spent playing a video game continuously. The official record attempt will take place in Golden Island Shopping Centre, Athlone from Thursday February 17 until Saturday February 19.

The team, known as ‘Guna Screach’, are Pierce McKenna, Mark Gethings, Stephen O’Connor, Tony Flynn, and Lorcan McKenna, all of whom are volunteers with Athlone Community Radio and also avid gamers who are enthusiastic to help worthy local causes with their skills. All are confident that they have the endurance to overtake the current record, which stands at 33 hours.

The attempt is fully endorsed by Microsoft, and is being sponsored by Golden Island. The game chosen by Guna Screach is the Xbox 360 game, Halo: Reach, which was the most popular game in 2010.

Speaking about the attempt, Lorcan McKenna said “The team are delighted to be able to support the Simon Community and Athlone Community Radio while attempting to break the world record, and would ask people to support us in this endeavour”.

Throughout the course of the attempt people can come along and show their support. There will also be raffles and prizes to be won, and other gamers will be able to join in the fun at different stages.

Manager of Athlone Community Radio, Mary Lennon, said “It’s great to see these young lads supporting causes within their community, and we are very happy to be involved with their record-breaking attempt”.

CEO of Midlands Simon, Tony O’Riordan, added; “We are delighted to be associated with this record attempt, it is really inspiring to see young people taking action and choosing to make a difference in their community. We would like to sincerely thank Lorcan and the team for their support and wish them all the best with the attempt. We would also like to thank Tony McDermott and Golden Island once again for their wonderful support. To break a world record would be a significant achievement and we would encourage people to come along to show their support for the team. It shows that when we work together that we can all make a difference and be the key to ending homelessness.”
