Dysart protesters grateful for support

The Wind Turbine Action Group South Roscommon (WTAGSR ) would like to thank all those who supported the recent drive to raise funds to conduct its campaign.

The group was set up in October following the news that Cavan-based alternative energy firm Gaeltech Ltd had applied to build 16 wind turbines in the first phase of a windfarm development for the area, which may eventually comprise more than 44 wind turbines.

Following over 400 submissions from concerned locals regarding the proposed windfarm, Roscommon County Council paused Gaeltech’s application last month to request more information from the company.

One of the biggest concerns voiced by the community was there had been a lack of information about the development and its impact on the local community ranging from noise, visual impact, implications on the environment, wildlife, and depopulation of the area to name a few.

Chairman of WTAGSR, Fearghal McHugh said: “I would like to thank everybody who supported us in our fundraising efforts. The fact that tickets were in such demand in this difficult financial time further demonstrates the opposition to plans for this massive industrial project.”

The draw took place recently in Dysart Community Centre and the winners were as follows:

1st Prize €1000, Mary Kelly, Caltraduff, Ballyforan. 2nd prize €500, Colm Lennon, Newtown, Trim, Co Meath. 3rd prize €250, Tony Doyle, Grange, Curraghboy.

“The next fundraising activity to take place will be a fashion show with a twist. Keep an eye out in local press for further information,” said Fearghal.
