Westmeath community group could win €10,000

A Westmeath-based community group has been shortlisted to be in with a chance of winning the overall EBS National Community Fund prize of €10,000 in funding. SWEETS was shortlisted by a panel of independent representatives as an organisation which makes an important contribution to the local community. The overall winner of the EBS Community Fund will be selected by the general public through an online vote at www.ebs.ie Votes will be accepted up until January 31.

The mission of SWEETS Community Services Project is to provide a professional information, education, and training service to the people of south Westmeath, with special emphasis on the marginalised in the community so that they may be empowered to achieve their potential. The organisation had already been selected by the local EBS office in Mullingar as a recipient of €500 in funding from the EBS Community Fund. The group was then shortlisted for the overall National Community Fund prize after beating off strong competition from other worthy community organisations throughout Westmeath.

Manager of the EBS Mullingar office, Robert McKenna, said: “The EBS Community Fund has had a huge response. All over Ireland, groups and organisations are working to improve the welfare of their local communities by selflessly giving up their time to help others. The EBS Community Fund has given these groups a chance to be recognised and rewarded for their amazing contribution to their local communities.

“Now, the EBS Community Fund is looking for one extraordinary group to be chosen by the public from the organisations shortlisted. The organisation that is eventually chosen will receive €10,000 in funding. We are delighted to be able to contribute to the communities in which we work and I hope that everyone will take the time to vote for SWEETS Community Services Project.”

Members of the public can find out more about all of the shortlisted groups on www.mylocalnews.ie and they can vote at www.ebs.ie The group with the most votes will be awarded the overall National EBS Community Fund prize of €10,000. The competition is open until January 31.
