Road deaths fall to record low in 2010

Some 212 people were killed on the country’s roads last year. This record low is very welcome. However, while a fall in road fatalities, down by 26 on the 2009 figure, is good news, it is still a fact that there are still over 200 too many deaths on our roads, and hundreds more badly injured.

Ten people died during last month, down from 18 in December 2009.

Commenting on the figures, a Garda spokesman said officers would continue to focus on driver behaviour to further reduce the number of deaths.

“The individual decisions of road users all over the country this year to change their behaviour have had a profound impact, resulting in reductions in death and serious injuries on our roads,” the spokesman said.
