Skoda tops 2010 IRC Rally Championship

Skoda has beaten its rivals to claim the top spot in the International Rally Championship. It has won both the manufacturer’s and driver’s awards in the 2010 Intercontinental Rally Challenge (IRC ). Skoda now tops Peugeot, the team that has dominated the championship for past three years.

Head of Skoda Motorsport, Michal Hrabánek received the cup for the winner of the manufacturer’s competition at the IRC Awards Ceremony in Cyprus on Sunday November 7.

Skoda Motorsport drivers Juho Hänninen and Mikko Markkula were overall winners of the driver’s award with another Skoda team of Jan Kopecky and Petr Stary finished in second position. Peugeot’s Kris Meek, the winner of the series last year, finished third.

Skoda's factory team took part in 11 of this year’s 12 IRC events in total and celebrated victory at seven of them. Besides these wins, Skoda crews achieved a further 17 podium positions.

Private teams supported by Skoda importers did very well, too, particularly Skoda UK Motorsport. The success of the Fabia Super 2000 in the 2010 season was crowned by a number of triumphs in national championships.
