Athlone jewellery thieves admit to €90,000 heist

Three men have admitted robbing over €90,000 worth of jewellery from an Athlone shop earlier this year.

The men, all from Lithuania, pleaded guilty at Mullingar Circuit Court to the robbery which took place at Angela Blacoe jewellers on Mardyke Street on March 6 this year.

They took 51 rings valued at €93, 871.75.

All three have been in custody since their arrest in March and were remanded in further custody for sentencing at the February sitting of the court.

They were originally arrested at Dublin Airport and the District Court at the time heard that none of them had assets, means, or permanent addresses in Ireland and had been in the country less than two weeks when the robbery took place.

During the robbery two women, one of whom was a customer, required medical attention after they were sprayed with an incapacitant by the robbers.

Gytis Zienius, Egidijus Peciulis, and Ovidijis Rumba all have addresses in Lithuania.

Zienius who lives in Kaunas and Peculius who lives at Joncua initially denied that the robbery involved 51 rings, saying there were only 21.

Rumba, also from Kaunas made no reply when charged.
