Hundreds of homes in Athlone were left without water on Wednesday and Thursday this week as the council worked to fix burst watermains in the Retreat and Pearse Street areas.
At time of going to print, council crews were still working on the fault in the Retreat/ Cartrontroy area, which they expected to have repaired by yesterday [Thursday] evening. The council became aware of the burst at 9.30 yesterday morning.
Homes between Altown and the Killyon Hill roundabout including Altown, Hill Court, Cypress Gardens, Carton Drive, Ashgrove, The Elms, Ardnaglug, and Cartrontroy experienced disruption to their water supply during yesterday’s repair works.
On Athlone’s west side, a burst watermain in Pearse Street on Wednesday gave rise to a day-long interruption to water supply in the Batteries, Baylough, old Galway Road, Goldsmith Terrace, Deerpark, Pearse Street, Main Street, The Docks, West Lodge, St Anne’s Terrace, and Mitchell’s Terrace.
The watermains were repaired at 7pm on Wednesday evening; however, the council advised that customers in this area may experience some disruption until such time as air locks in the watermain network dissipate. Staff were still attending to the area yesterday [Thursday].
Distressed residents from Athlone’s west side contacted the Advertiser early on Wednesday to express their concerns about the lack of water supply in such severe weather conditions, and disappointment that the council were not supplying water tanks to the affected areas.
In both cases regular updates were posted on the Athlone Town Council website, with the council apologising for any inconvenience caused.
