Gardaí in Athlone have made a further appeal for witnesses in the cases of two women who were robbed in close proximity to one another in the Golden Island area last week.
The more serious of the two incidents happened in Burgess Park beside the river on the morning of Weddnesday, November 10 at around 11am, when the victim surrendered her mobile phone after she was threatened with a knife by a man in a dark jumper and blue jeans.
The following day, at around the same time, another woman had her mobile phone robbed from her pocket by a man in a white hoody on John Broderick Street.
Gardai could not confirm the incidents were related but are keeping an open mind on the similarities, and are calling for anybody who was in the area at the times in question to report any behaviour, suspicious or otherwise, that might have caught their attention in the Burgess Park/Golden Island area on November 10/11.
Anybody who feels they might have any information, however trivial, should contact Athlone Garda Station on (090 ) 6498550, or the Garda confidential hotline on 1800 666111 in complete confidence.
