It’s that time of year again and Mount Temple Drama Group are very busy putting the finishing touches to their production of A Wake In The West by MJ Ginnelly.
This year the play is being produced/directed by Chris Tuohy, no stranger to the stage himself he has embraced this comedy as if he wrote it himself!
The play is set in a country house on the outskirts of a small town on the west coast of Ireland. Tom Healy (Paddy McMenamin ), the recently deceased, loved a drink or 10 and when he shuffled off to meet his maker he left a very intriguing letter with the doctor. His family and friends are not amused at all the shenanigans that go on at his wake, you will never see a wake like it!
This year, for the first time in a long time, all the actors are experienced in treading the boards with Mount Temple Drama Group. Some have been away for a few years and have returned for this production. Others have been involved year after year in some guise or other. All are loved by the audience and drama group alike, be it on stage or behind the scenes.
As the story unfolds on stage, you get to meet these funny characters in all their glory, telling stories about the dead man, then try to obey his last wishes but maybe not everything going the way it should. Rose ( Priscilla Hanevy ) the old neighbour gets very attached to something belonging to Tom and the consequences have to be seen to be believed. Martin (Frank Rourke ) and Joan (Edel Martin ) are old lovers from before he moved to America. Joan is on tenderhooks waiting for him to return and hoping that they can take up where they left off, but will they be able to?
And as for poor nervous Margaret (Breda Slevin ), the shock of what she is witness to leaves her speechless; of course her husband Barney (John Fleming ) is drowning his sorrows and of little help to anyone. With a very funny scene involving Margaret and Dr John (James Paradise ), Barney and the local priest, you’ll be so entertained by their hilarious dilemmas that all your worries will fade into insignificance!
