St Brigid’s capable of being crowned kings of Connacht

St Brigid’s v Killererin ( Tuam, Sunday 2pm )

All roads lead to Tuam on Sunday for anyone with connections in Kiltoom/Cam as the famous Green and Reds of St Brigid’s battle it out with Galway champs Killererin for the right to be crowned Connacht champions.

The Saints of course won the Shane McGettigan Cup in 2006 and lost the decider to Ballina Stephenites in 2007. They would dearly love to bring the coveted piece of silverware back to the county this year to add to the Connacht title won by Roscommon this year.

Killererin will have Padraig Joyce back on board following his honeymoon. If Noel O’Brien’s men are to create another piece of history they will have to keep a tight rein on both Padraig and his cousin Nicky.

Having easily accounted for Eastern Harps in the quarter-final Brigid’s got a bit of a fright against Glencar/Manorhamilton. That fright might stand them in good stead going into Sunday’s game. They will be aware of their need to tighten up at the back and not to concede goals as easily as they did against the Leitrim men.

Peter Domican, Ian Kilbride, and Robbie Kelly will need to provide leadership at the back. A big performance will again be needed from Karol Mannion in midfield. Up front Frankie Dolan will be looking to continue his rich vein of form which has played a big part in getting his side this far. He can count on the likes of Cathal McHugh, Conor McHugh, and Senan Kilbride to play the role of able assistants.

While this game is due to be televised live, a large travelling support is sure to make their way to the famed home of Galway football. I have a gut feeling that it could be well worth their while because Noel O’Brien’s men have the experience and firepower to seal the deal in what should be a close encounter.
