Photographer offers bird’s eye view

A renowned archaeological photographer is to deliver a talk in the Prince of Wales Hotel in Athlone next Tuesday November 2.

Dr Eamonn O’Donoghue, a native of Roscrea, Co Tipperary, is a skilled pilot and uses his own plane, and much of his free time, carrying out aerial photography of sites that are of archaeological and historic interest.

During his lecture Dr O’Donoghue will share some magnificent images of aerial archaeology in the West of Ireland, and will explain their significance in the advancement of the historical and archaeological knowledge of any given location.

While the majority of images are from the West of Ireland, it is understand that some images of Lough Ree are also included. This lecture promises to give a new perspective on some of the treasures on our doorstep.

Dr O’Donoghue has had a lifelong interest in archaeology and history and is particularly interested in castles. Indeed he is at present carefully restoring Claregalway Castle in County Galway where he eventually hopes to live.

All are welcome to his lecture, which takes place in the Prince of Wales Hotel, Athlone on Tuesday November 2 at 8pm. Tea and coffee will be served.
