Three youths are likely to face charges after an attack with a broken botttle on a female student in the early hours of last Thursday left her requiring stitches just under her eye.
The indiscriminate attack which occurred in the Kilmacoo/Willow Park area as the young woman walked home with a male companion was followed by a number of quick arrests. It is not believed to be feud-related, and the victim was not known to her attackers. Also, this attack is not believed in any way to be connected with a number of assaults on females in the Bonavalley bridge area in 2008 and 2009.
A Garda file in relation to the attack has been sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions, but no directions for trial have been returned as yet. The three teenagers arrested were released after a number of hours questioning in Athlone Garda Station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act. The victim, an AIT student in her twenties and not from the town, was treated in a Galway hospital before being released.
