Bunbrosna bounce back to senior ranks

Bunbrosna 1-12 Ballynacargy 2-06

Having been relegated 12 months ago, Bunbrosna made the most of their opportunity for a quick return to senior ranks at the expense of luckless Ballynacargy in the intermediate football decider last weekend. Bunbrosna seized control in the opening half and led by seven points at one stage.

Ballynacargy squandered many opportunities in the opening half and failed to raise a flag until the 23rd minute. Trailing 1-7 to 1-01 at the break, Bal certainly faced an uphill battle. To their credit they upped their performance in the second half. A well-taken Willie Murtagh goal reduced the deficit to three points. Bunbrosna however always seemed to have that bit extra and despite the brave efforts of Ballynacargy they could not bridge the gap. It was Bunbrosna who tagged over a few late points to run out deserving winners.

For Ballynacargy this was an especially bitter pill to swallow, having now fallen at the final hurdle three years running. With Kinnegad in the intermediate ranks next season, competition for promotion will be equally tough in 12 months time.

Bunbrosna however deserve their place in senior football. They are currently in the running to win division one of the league and they were the outstanding team at intermediate level throughout the year. They will relish the return to the top flight and have the material to remain there for a number of years. In the meantime they can look forward to a provincial championship opener against the Offaly champions. If they put their minds to it they are well capable of enjoying an extended run in the provincial competition, as Tubberclair did last year.
