Westmeath schools invited to take part in ‘Our World’ Awards

County Westmeath primary schools are being asked to enter projects in the ‘Our World’ awards’ to help promote awareness about issues in the developing world amongst our children.

“The awards, which are supported by the Government, encourage children in the county to focus on issues such as hunger, disease and poverty in the developing world,” said the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Micheál Martin, TD.

“Projects can involve art, drama, essays, poetry, film and music.

“Last year more than 450 schools nationally took part in the awards involving more than 13,000 children.

“I would encourage Westmeath teachers who have not entered their classes before to use this opportunity to enter projects and increase awareness of global issues amongst our young people.

“We know that young people in Westmeath and throughout the country have a great interest in challenges facing their world. “Through their support of local charities and aid agencies in sponsored walks, sports, silences and even fasts, Westmeath’s children are anxious to do their bit to bring about change.

“This is an opportunity to increase their understanding of life in the developing world”.

The awards are open for children from third to sixth class with a closing date of December 5.

“Ireland has earned a reputation internationally for being a world leader in responding to the challenges of the developing world, by ensuring our children are aware of the difficulties facing poorer nations. We will be able to build on our good work on the ground into the future”, concluded Minister Martin.
