A little bit of pop history comes to Athlone

To anyone with even a passing interest in pop music history, Merrill Osmond needs no introduction. Merrill was the lead singer, primary song writer, and at times producer of the amazing story that was The Osmonds in the 70s.

To put that in perspective for those too young to remember, The Osmonds produced 47 gold and platinum records with total sales exceeding 100 million worldwide. The Osmonds still hold the record for earning an amazing 11 gold and platinum awards in one year beating such music superstars as The Beatles, Elvis Presley, The Rolling Stones, and Michael Jackson.

Merrill himself has received two People's Choice Awards, five number one Billboard hits, and two Grammy award nominations. In addition he has produced over 90 teleplays and scripts for television.

His philanthropic work as the co-founder of the Osmond Foundation, which produces the The Children's Miracle Network telethon is astounding. To date CMN has earned an astounding $3 billion dollars for children's hospitals. Merrill has been named honorary chairman for his work with the Special Olympics and has received many awards for his work with the youth around the world.

His latest album The Voice features some of the songs made famous "way back when", together with new songs written in collaboration with great friend Mal Pope. Mal, loved by the late legendary John Peel was at one time signed to Elton John's Rocket Records. Today Mal continues to release albums on a regular basis but is also very heavily involved in radio and TV in the UK.

Merril Osmond plays The Radisson hotel, Athlone on Sunday October 26.
