A Westmeath student who is hoping to inter more than 30 time capsules during Culture Night on Friday September 24 is urging all schools throughout the county to take part in making history.
Kevin Glennon from St Finian’s College Mullingar intends to capture the essence of life in Westmeath schools in 2010 by giving schools the opportunity to gather various artifacts, which will then be buried and dug up in 100 years.
With some 25 schools already taking part, the contents of the time capsules include everything from photos, prayers, a book of autographs, Tesco Club Cards, and student stories.
Son of Matthew and Helen Glennon from Coralstown, Kevin said, “I’m calling on other schools to join in as well. It would be brilliant if all the schools in Westmeath took part. I chose Belvedere to bury the capsules because it will be around in 100 years when the capsules are dug up as there won’t be any houses built in there.”
The time capsules will be buried at Belvedere House after a short ceremony between 4.30pm and 5.30pm on September 24.
General manager of Belvedere House, Bartle D’Arcy said, “Belvedere House is delighted to be able to organise and host some events in support of such a great initiative such as Culture Night on Friday September 24.
“As a fantastic example of Cultural Built Heritage, the Belvedere Estate is the perfect backdrop for a wide range of innovative activities from interring time capsules to art installations, day and night on the 24th. Events on during Culture Night enable people to discover some more about the area they live in and the array of talents that exist there,” enthused Mr D’Arcy.
