The end of the summer marks back to work for the committee of Athlone Film Club as preparations are underway for the biggest and most exciting season yet which will commence in September in the Dean Crowe Theatre and Arts Centre, Athlone.
The club which was established in September 2008 has gone from strength to strength in the past few years and is now firmly a part of Athlone’s vibrant arts and cultural scene.
Linked with Access Cinema, the club was formed to showcase contemporary, classic, and worldwide films that are not normally shown in mainstream cinemas.
Films are screened every second Tuesday in the Dean Crowe Theatre preceded by a complimentary glass of wine.
This has certainly struck a chord with Athlone audiences as the club has built up a loyal membership base and is now one of the biggest film clubs in the country.
The club is also proud to have been the recipient of awards such as Shannonside Northern Sounds Arts Award and to have taken part in the annual St Patrick’s Day parade where it received a prize for best original entry. Members also enjoyed the club’s inaugural table quiz in An Cearnóg Bar, which was a hugely successful night.
Chairman of Athlone Film Club, Alan Shaw is confident that the upcoming autumn season will be the best yet with plenty of treats in store for members. He is also delighted that the club will be involved in Westmeath Culture Day on September 24, particularly as the club will be screening the film version of the winning All-Ireland Drama Festival play, The History Boys.
