Westmeath farmer becomes nation’s 18th farm fatality

A local farmer died after falling into a slurry tank in the townland of Killare, between Ballymore and Loughnavalley, on Tuesday afternoon, August 17.

The man, named locally as 56-year-old Eddie Phillips, was in the process of spreading slurry on his land when the incident happened at about 1.20pm, August 17.

It is believed some neighbours removed the man from the tank and attempted to resuscitate him until the ambulance arrived.

He was taken to Midland Regional Hospital Mullingar where he was later pronounced dead.

The incident is being investigated separately by the Health and Safety Authority and the Gardaí and is the18th agricultural fatality this year.
