Athlone students succeed at maths, science, and technology

Excited students across Athlone picked up their Leaving Cert results on Wednesday August 18. And despite a high proportion of students across the country struggling with maths and science, Athlone students showed strong results. Some 57,000 students across the country received their results this week.

Speaking to the Advertiser, principal of the Marist, Tom Blaine said, “There was a great atmosphere here this morning, a great place to be, really and truly, there was a great feeling with the parents and the lads who were here.

“It’s great but we seem to to be continuing to buck the national trends in maths and science and business studies. We always have done seriously well in maths, and we have again,” he added.

“The top rank lads will always do well but the middle rank lads did extremely well. The top score at the school was 600 but the best result for a particular student from the teachers’ point of view was 470,” he explained.

“They really are a fine bunch of young men, some of the best we ever had and we’ll actually miss them, and while I’m at it, I must compliment the staff of the school. We wouldn’t be churning out results like that if they’re not doing their jobs.”

Gearóid O’Conamha, principal of St Aloysius College said; “Here, we’re delighted, they’re all excited. The results were excellent and there were some pretty high achievers.”

“The repeat class did very well, and one student managed to better his score by 200 points. There were a lot of A1s across the board, and in the new technology course the class managed eight As.

“It’s very gratifying from our point of view that all our lads got the Leaving Cert. That’s more gratifying and rewarding than anything else. It’s the lads that have to graft and overcome adversities that really have to be complimented,” he added.
