Fuaim Chonamara is continuing its fantastic run at Monroe's Live, Dominick Street, Galway for just two more nights.
Following last Thursday night’s sell-out show with capacity crowds, the show will run again on August 28 and for one additional night, due to demand, on its closing night of Thursday September 2.
Together with special guests Dessie O'Halloran, Caitriona Canavan, and Earach, the outstanding performances from the Cunninghams & Co. are bringing audiences to their feet as the show goes from strength to strength.
Since opening in June, the show has been reviving one of Europe’s oldest dance forms and transforming it in to a wonderful display of dance style, skill, and athleticism. The show formed the core of the Galway presence in Stirling for the Stirling Galway Sessions 2010 and was performed live to a crowd of over 10,000 people at the Volvo Ocean Race last year.
Fuaim Chonamara (meaning sound of Connemara ) contains a wealth of talented musicians and dancers from all over the west of Ireland with the amazing Brian Cunningham headlining the show alongside his four siblings Irene, Ashling, Michael, and Lorraine. The show also features Riverdance stars Siobhain Manson and Doireann Carney with guest appearances by singing favourites Dessie O’Halloran and Caitriona Ni Cheannabhain.
Concentrating on the authentic and most traditional aspects of Irish culture the performances showcase the roots and origins of Irish dance, celebrating its close relationship with traditional Irish music and the celebratory elements of the dancing style. The intimate setting of the venue provides a wonderful platform in which to experience the profound force of inspirational physical exertion together with the passionate practice of the musicians.
Sean-nós is a highly improvisational, low to the ground, rhythmic dancing style in which the performer is free to interpret the music. It is believed that American tap and Appalachian clog dancing can trace their roots back to sean-nós dancing steps and styles of west Galway. Sean Nós is the oldest form of Irish dance dating back centuries to the days of the thatched cottage and half door or barrel dancing. Performed alongside set dancing in hobnail boots in the days of no electricity, it took place by candlelight with sparks coming off boots from splint on the floor, making it an electrifying experience.
Combining old and new, Fuaim Chonamara captures the essence of our cultural heritage and its sheer force, vitality, and addictive fresh vibe is certain to appeal to young and old who are guaranteed a mind-blowing experience in every performance. The Cunningham sisters are a highlight of the show with their own particular take on traditional Sean-Nós with a funky edge and of course Brian Cunnigham who continues to amaze crowds with his dancing talent and feats of athleticism on stage.
The Sean-nós show is full of warm-hearted banter, wonderful music and pure, traditional sean-nós dancing in the friendly atmosphere of Monroe's Live. Catch the show while you can with tickets available from Zhivago records and Monroe's Tavern.
