Wales declares Athlone a Dublin suburb!

A Welsh paper this week referred to the AIT stadium as being in Dublin, despite the town where the paper is published being closer to Ireland than Athlone is to the capital.

Reporting on the underage, triangular Celtic Games meeting which took place last weekend at the Institute’s superb, IAAF-standard stadium between Ireland, Wales, and Scotland, The Western Telegraph reported on their local girl, Lauren Bell winning the u18 girls’ 800m in the “Athlone Stadium, Dublin”.

Bizarrely, the photograph they published to accompany the article even had a big “AIT” logo board in full focus behind the featured runner, but this was obviously not enough of a clue.

The Telegraph is published in the town of Haverfordwest in Pembrokeshire in the extreme south west of Wales, and is only 110kms (70 miles ) from Rosslare.

What is doubly surprising with the report in the paper’s sports section is the fact that the Western Telegraph’s local rugby team is the Scarlets from Llanelli, an outfit who must travel through Athlone at least once a year to get to the Sportsgrounds in Galway to play Connacht in the Magniers League.

A finger-wagging email was dispatched in medium dudgeon to the editor of The Western Telegraph but no reply was received at going to press.
