Westmeath County Council is proud to present ‘Time Aligned’, an exhibition of new works by local artist Lorraine Mimnagh, in The Atrium, County Buildings, Mullingar from August 3 to September 14.
This latest series of paintings, entitled ‘Time Aligned’, is inspired by Lorraine’s recent visits to Loughcrew. They are abstract oil and mixed media landscapes on canvas inspired by the symbols and motifs that can be found on the stones within the cairns at Loughcrew. The work has a textural quality built up by using sand and glazes, to give the impression of layering over a period of time.
The paintings focus on creating a sense of spiritual appreciation and personal interaction with the landscape of Loughcrew and in particular the cairns of Loughcrew, with the sense of standing in suspended time as these structures are over 5,000 years old.
Lorraine participated in Westmeath County Council’s artist bursary programmein 2010 and received a bursary to travel to the Tyrone Guthrie Centre where this body of work was initiated. She has also received funding from Westmeath VEC for continued professional development. She received an honours BA in Visual Arts from the University of Leicester, a PGCE teaching diploma from De Montfort University in the UK and a National Diploma in Art and Design from the Crawford College of Art and Design in Cork.
Lorraine has exhibited in various locations throughout Ireland since 1993 and has participated in various community artists residencies and commissions in Westmeath since 1999. She lives in Mullingar and teaches art and portfolio preparation to Leaving Certificate level in Castlepollard Community College.
