Punk with a local twist from Very Angry Girls

If you like your bands sassy and your music punky with a little bit of pop thrown in, get along to the Athlone Music Festival this weekend where Very Angry Girls promise to rock the stage on Saturday afternoon.

Very Angry Girls is an all-girl indie punk rock band, with a hint of pop, and a strong local connection with bassist and vocalist Louise McCormack hailing from Moate.

Fellow band members Carolyn Bourke on lead guitar, Sinead Mitchell on guitar and lead vocals, and Larissa Mirtchink on drums hail from Tipperary, Laois, and Cork respectively.

In early 2009 Sinead, Louise, and Larissa came together in Limerick to form Very Angry Girls. After gaining a bit of a following, the three girls got a drum kit and PA, and the band properly began. In March this year fourth member Carolyn Bourke joined and the girls were finally happy with their sound. They released their debut EP Less Pants More Attitude in April.

The band have been gigging constantly since October, playing venues such as Dolan’s in Limerick, Dublin’s Twisted Pepper, Cork’s Pavilion, The Stables in Mullingar, Roisin Dubh Galway, and many more. According to Louise they have played “some really amazing gigs, with great bands like We Should be Dead, Heathers, Blasterbra, and Yes Cadets, and some really nice venues”.

To top off a hectic summer of gigging, Louise is looking forward to entertaining the home crowds.

“We’re especially excited about Athlone Music Festival, me in particular. Everyone I know is going to be there, it’s very exciting,” she says.

The Moate native describes the band as “a punk rock band with a bit of pop” - “Take out a couple of words and most songs are radio friendly!” she adds.

Very Angry Girls take to the stage at 2pm on Saturday at the Athlone Music Festival. For more information on the band visit www.myspace.com/veryangrygirls, and for info on the festival visit www.athlonemusicfestival.com
