Gardai in Navan are “very pleased” with the progression of the investigation into the murder of Athlone native Martin O’Gorman in the Meath town four weeks ago, but expect it could be another month before the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP ) gives any formal direction on the case.
“The investigation is ongoing along normal channels...but no file is completed yet,” said Detective Inspector Alf Martin.
“Hopefully it will be ready within a month,” he added.
DI Martin was referring to the file of statements and evidence collected and collated by gardai from the crime scene and from the two teenagers, aged 16 and 18, arrested in the locality on July 7.
Both of these, and a third person arrested, have been released pending a direction from the DPP as to how to go on with the case. As with normal legal practice, nobody can be named until charges are brought, and even then, the 16-year-old will not be named publicly, unless a judge decides to waive his anonymity.
“We are very pleased with the level of co-operation from the general public. There is a sense of outrage here as well,” said DI Martin.
The body of Martin O’Gorman (63 ), a plant hire contractor who lived on Battery Road in Athlone, was discovered by a taxi driver lying between cars on Academy Street in Navan in the early hours of June 21. He had suffered a number of blows to the head.
