Westmeath senior football championship

After a break of seven weeks, round three of the Westmeath senior football championship takes place this weekend. On Saturday in Moate at 6pm Coralstown/Kinnegad will be hoping to get their first win of the campaign when they take on Tubberclare. Having disposed of the services of Colm Coyle as manager, Kinnegad will be out to prove a point and look capable of collecting both points on offer.

That game is followed by one of the most interesting ties of the round as Athlone and Maryland go head to head at 7.30pm. Both sides have two wins under their belt and a win on Saturday would secure a quarter-final spot. Maryland made it to the quarter-final last year while it has been a number of years since Athlone emerged from the group. Both sides have plenty of talent in their ranks and it promises to be a mouth-watering clash.

Cusack Park hosts a double header on Sunday. At 6pm St Loman’s will be pushed all the way by Killucan but should emerge on top while at 7.30pm Tyrrellspass should be too strong for The Downs.

Garrycastle will have too much firepower for St Malachy’s when they meet in Tang at 5pm on Sunday. That game is followed by Mullingar Shamrocks and Castledaly at 6.30pm. Derek Heavin is a big loss to Castledaly and Shamrocks can claim the spoils.
