Teenagers arrested over Athlone man’s death

There was a new development this week in the investigation into the murder of Athlone man Martin O’Gorman, with the arrest on Wednesday morning of two teenagers from the Navan area.

The two males, aged 16 and 18, were still being detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 at Kells and Navan Garda stations at time of going to print yesterday [Thursday], pending instructions on whether they should be charged.

Mr O’Gorman (63 ) died as a result of a number of blows to the side of the head, sustained in the early hours of Monday morning June 21 in Navan, Co Meath. It is thought the Athlone native was assaulted while walking on his own on Academy Street, Navan, where he was out socialising having attended a Meath GAA match.

He was found by a taxi driver lying between two parked cars, and Gardai believe up to four people, possibly two of whom were women, may have been involved in the attack.

Gardai issued a fresh appeal for information this week, and are anxious to speak to a number of people who may have been in the Academy Street area shortly before 12.30am on Monday morning June 21.

They include a a male cycling a bicycle along Academy Street in the direction of the Dublin Road at around 12.20am. He was wearing dark clothing with a hood up, had white stripes on his trousers or tracksuit bottoms, and wore white runners.

Information is also being sought on a black VW Golf - or similar type car - travelling along Academy Street towards the Dublin Road around 12.30am, and a saloon motor car travelling towards the town around 12.30am.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Incident Room at Navan Garda Station at (046 ) 9079930, or the Garda Confidential Line at 1800 666111.

Mr O’Gorman hailed from Athlone’s Battery Road and worked in the family business Midland Crane Hire. He is survived by his younger brothers Paschal and Dermot and nephews and nieces.
